It’s Not Just About The Dress – Tips On Choosing Your Bridal Accessories

Well hello again and I hope you’re having a lovely week. It does rather seem that January is speeding by already which is a bit of a shocker but it does mean that Valentine’s is getting closer by the day and, as a complete romantic, this does make me happy! This week, I’m here with a little look at the wonderful range of bridal accessories that are available as well as a few hints and tips that it’s worth keeping in mind when you’re off hunting for those perfect finishing touches. I do so hope that this feature is super helpful and if you’re all excited about jewels, shoes and other adornments, why not book an Accessories Appointment here at Cock & Kate and indulge yourself? As you might gather from the below, I’m a bit of a fan of the little details…

Let’s start with shoes and it goes without saying that, on your wedding day, comfort is key. From walking down the aisle and posing for photographs to greeting guests and hitting the dancefloor, you’re going to be on the go all day. Can you walk easily in your chosen shoes? If you’re used to wearing flats or kitten heels, suddenly slipping on a pair of six-inch heels might not be a great idea. Stick with what you know and relax! Make sure you’ve got your shoes in time for your first fitting so that your dress can be adjusted to the perfect length and you’ll then have time to break your shoes in ahead of the big day. Our range of fabulous bridal shoes by Rachel Simpson are made from the softest leather so you’ll be super comfortable from the word go.

Veils are another personal choice so the first thing to decide is whether you want one or not. If you’re not sure, I’d say go for it because there’s really only one day in your life when you get the chance to! If your dress is ornate or embellished, keep your veil simple or opt for an embellished or patterned veil to complement a simpler gown. There are many lengths of veils by Helen Martin for you to try at Coco & Kate and we stock both stiffer tulle veils (great for volume) and soft silky designs that are delicately beautiful with more than a hint of the Duchess of Cambridge! Don’t forget the birdcage veils by Lily Bella either – perfect if you’d like a hint of bridal without a full veil and whilst they’re great for vintage weddings, they work equally well with other styles too.

As well as veils, there are also a multitude of beautiful hair accessories available and it’s definitely worth a chat with your hairstylist before choosing. For example, bridal pins won't work if you don't have anything to tuck them into, and very heavy combs won't work well on naturally thin hair. Headbands tend to work well for up or down styles. Also consider your hair colour because hair accessories with pearls look spectacular on darker hues, but can sometimes look a little lost on blondes. If you are a beautiful fair-haired bride to be, then a headpiece incorporating sparkling crystals will look incredible. I know I’m biased but Klaire Van Elton and Debbie Carlisle’s designs are beyond stunning and they’re in the boutique, tempting me every day!

It’s always fun to change your look a little during the day and an on-trend option is certainly the bridal sash. They can really transform a gown without you having to spend a fortune. You can get creative with colour (perhaps match your bridesmaids?) or using a contrasting fabric. Lace on taffeta or satin on silk looks stunning but my current favourite come courtesy of Vera Wang – a horsehair sash over just about any fabric you like!

Shrugs and boleros are just perfect if you’d like a little extra coverage, whether that’s in church or simply because you don’t want to get chilly. Faux fur is truly wonderful in winter and autumn and lovely lace is perfect all year round. Our divine lace boleros are by Wilderness and they are exquisite.

We’ll finish our little look at accessories with garters and our gorgeous garters by Atelier Rousseau are oh-so charming and customisable. Do think about your skirt before you choose a garter because you do need to make sure that it hugs your thigh without interrupting the line of your skirt.

So, that’s a whistle-stop tour through the world of bridal accessories. If you’ve got any questions or if you’d appreciate a little advice, don’t hesitate to get in touch and I’ll be happy to help.
